Tree Climbing in Costa Rica: Climb Into the Corcovado Canopy

The Arboreal Experience at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge is guided tree climbing in Costa Rica, a 3-hour rope ascent into the rainforest canopy on a private 189-acre reserve at the edge of Corcovado National Park. It is the only hotel tree climbing park in the country.

Imagine putting both hands on a rainforest tree trunk and pulling yourself up into it. One handhold to the next, legs pushing, arms steadying, until the canopy that sat far above your head at breakfast is level with your face and you’re sitting in open air where the branches spread.

That’s the Arboreal Experience. As you climb through our circuit of trees, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, overlooking Drake Bay, and it’s the only hotel tree climbing park in Costa Rica. You’ll come down with a new appreciation for how a Costa Rican jungle is built, because you’ll have spent a morning inside the part of it most visitors only ever look up at.

And it’s one of many mornings waiting for you on the reserve.

What is a tree climbing experience in Costa Rica?

A tree climbing experience in Costa Rica is a guided ascent up a living tree on a rope. Arboreal means living in the trees, a perfectly fitting word for this kind of tour.

You’re geared up before you leave the ground. A harness, straps, and an automatic belay that keeps you attached to a safety-certified device at every point of the ascent, so the Tarzan daydream you’ve had since you were nine comes with proper hardware behind it. If you have zero rope experience, that’s fine. Most guests turn up with none at all, and a bilingual guide stays beside you the whole way, sets the order of the trunks, and tells you where to put a foot when the next handhold sits further apart than you expected.

So you arrive under your own strength somewhere you would otherwise only look up at, and you get there slowly enough to notice how the forest is put together on the way.

What does the Arboreal Experience at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge involve?

Side view of an arborist or climber wearing a red jacket, safety helmet, and harness, using climbing ropes and foot stirrups against a thick tree trunk.

The Arboreal Experience involves a 3-hour guided climb through a circuit of trees, running from the Guide House on the reserve. There are two starts a day, 8:00 am and 11:00 am, and they run exactly the same way, so pick whichever suits your morning.

The trunks carry handhold pieces designed specifically for climbing trees, attached with straps that prevent any harm or damage to the tree. You clip into the automatic belay, your weight goes onto the line, and your feet leave the ground. From there the climb is self-paced. Move when you’re ready, rest where you like, and the line takes the load the moment you stop, which is what turns a breather halfway up into an ordinary part of the morning rather than a problem.

We built the circuit with El Mosqueton, an outdoor adventure developer, and it appears on the tour list as Arboreal Tree Climbing.

Height arrives gradually on a climb like this. One handhold, then the next, and somewhere in the middle the view opens out over Drake Bay and you stop counting.

Why climb on the Osa Peninsula?

An aerial panoramic view of lush green rainforest meeting sandy beaches and blue ocean waters along the Osa Peninsula near Corcovado, Costa Rica.

You climb on the Osa Peninsula because of the forest you’re climbing into, which sits inside what National Geographic called the most biologically intense place on Earth. Corcovado Wilderness Lodge holds a private 189-acre reserve with national park and refuge land wrapping it on three sides, 2 km of oceanfront, and no road in. You arrive by boat. Walk out of your villa and half a mile of trail ends at the park boundary.

Lowland rainforest changes the scale of everything. The trunks widen, the understory closes over the trail, and the layer you climb into is the one doing the flowering and the fruiting, which is why so much of the movement in a rainforest happens overhead.

The trees themselves are worth knowing by name. Strangler figs germinate high in the branches of a host tree and grow down around it until the host is gone, so a fig you pass on the trail is a tree that built itself around another tree. Ask your guide to point one out, because once you’ve seen one you’ll spot them everywhere.

Every stay here plants a tree through Every Stay Does Good, and SCP Hotels is 224,000 trees into that count. Worth knowing while you’re standing at the base of one.

What do you see from the rainforest canopy?

Climbers in safety helmets and harnesses lying on a suspended tree net, looking out at the Pacific ocean through the high rainforest tree branches.

From the rainforest canopy you see across the top of the forest and out over Drake Bay, suspended on the belay with the crowns running on in every direction. Look down and you get trunks, leaf litter, and whatever crosses the trail. Look out and the work of the forest is happening at eye level, where the birds and the blue Morpho butterflies are already busy.

One guest who stayed in an Ocean Bungalow put the trees first: “CWL offers boots and sticks: take them. The trees are exuberant all throughout the property: you will lose yourself in total contemplation.”

The reserve is biodiverse enough to keep two research labs working on it year-round, and the Restor Forest Research Lab studies biodiversity, carbon and land use across this ground and the park beside it. The tree you’re sitting in may well be a study site.

Who is the Arboreal Experience right for?

A climber using rope ascension gear to scale the side of a massive, tall rainforest tree surrounded by dense green foliage in Corcovado.

The Arboreal Experience suits anyone who wants their hands on the forest and is comfortable working at height on a line. It asks for steady effort in short bursts and a willingness to stop when your arms want a minute, and the guide handles all the technique. Coming down is the belay’s job. You lean back into the harness, the device lowers you, and you’re at the Guide House inside the same 3 hours.

Ask reception for the age, weight and fitness guidelines while you’re choosing dates, and they’ll confirm them against the day you want. Wear closed shoes you can push off in, bring a small bag for anything that rides up with you, and keep the rubber boots in your room for the trails. Our what to pack list covers the rest.

Pair the climb with a morning on the trails and you get the forest at two heights in one day. The flat Cotinga Trail covers 0.3 miles and the Tinamu Trail covers 1.7, and best hikes near Drake Bay walks you through both.

How do you add the Arboreal Experience to your stay?

You add the Arboreal Experience to your stay by choosing it inside one of three vacation packages, or by asking reception once you’re on property.

Picture the shape of it. The boat in through the Sierpe mangroves the day before, coffee at Terra Kitchen in the morning, then the harness. You can be up a tree inside the most biologically intense place on Earth by the middle of your first full day.
