Upcoming Expeditions
MORE THAN A DIVE TRIP. A SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION INTO THE LIVING PACIFIC
This marine conservation expedition invites a small group of travelers to explore the waters of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula while gaining rare insight into the science behind coral reef protection.
Hosted in collaboration with Innoceana and based at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, the program blends refined luxury travel with immersive exploration, scientific learning, and conservation awareness.
Participants explore the reefs of Caño Island while learning from researchers studying coral ecosystems and marine biodiversity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific
Expeditions include both snorkeling and advanced scuba diving experiences. Please note that participation in scuba diving activities requires prior certification. Guests who prefer not to dive can still fully engage through guided snorkeling and hands-on marine conservation activities, complemented by a range of land-based experiences at Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, including rainforest exploration, wildlife encounters, and curated wellness offerings.
Participants experience the ocean not only as divers, but as witnesses to the scientific work shaping the future of coral reefs.
A Week of Exploration
and Science
Over eight days, participants explore the reef ecosystems of Caño Island through guided dives and scientific discussions.
Where the Pacific Still Feels Wild
The waters surrounding Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula are among the most biologically rich marine environments in Central America. Just offshore lies Caño Island, home to coral reefs that support reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and vast schools of tropical fish.
Science Beneath
the Surface
Since 2019, marine researchers from Innoceana
have conducted coral monitoring programs around Caño Island.
Their work tracks coral health, bleaching events, and reef resilience.
This research, combined with novel research completed at the Innoceana laboratory, helps identify climate-resilient coral colonies and informs restoration strategies aimed at strengthening reef ecosystems in a warming ocean.
Conservation in Action
The expedition also supports our broader conservation initiatives across the Osa Peninsula, including programs like Pristine Playa, which organizes coastal clean-ups and ocean education activities with the community to protect marine ecosystems.
🔹 Responsible tourism can play a powerful role in sustaining ocean conservation.
Coral monitoring programs across the Osa Peninsula help scientists understand reef health and ecosystem resilience.
Scientific diving activities allow observation of coral ecosystems and marine biodiversity.
Marine pollution reduction initiatives remove waste from fragile coastal ecosystems.
Community education strengthens environmental awareness and conservation efforts.
Conservation Leadership
Goldman Environmental Prize winner leading conservation initiatives that combine science and community action to restore coastal ecosystems.
Coral immunologist studying coral resilience and reef health in changing ocean conditions.
Insights from Dr. Caroline Palmer’s research are shared with participants throughout the expedition, including a virtual keynote during the program.

Alliance between Innoceana and Corcovado Wilderness Lodge by SCP
This expedition supports active coral resilience research and long-term reef monitoring at Caño Island, while contributing to the protection of the wider ecosystem that sustains turtles, sharks, and other migratory pelagic species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Through this alliance and the new expedition programs, we will support marine research, habitat restoration, and community education initiatives designed to safeguard coral reefs, marine wildlife, and coastal ecosystems.
At Corcovado Wilderness Lodge, we believe that tourism can be a force for regeneration.
